Discover the MTR Station Rail Voyage Exhibition

Hong Kong’s MTR system has always been a cornerstone of the city’s public transportation, playing a vital role in connecting various districts and facilitating smooth commutes. To celebrate this iconic transit network, the MTR Corporation has unveiled the “MTR Station Rail Voyage” exhibition at Hung Hom Station. Designed and executed by IDG, this exhibition provides an immersive journey through the history and development of Hong Kong’s railways. Featuring three retired trains—the Yellow Head, the MLR, and the 56 cars—the exhibition blends nostalgic elements with modern technology, creating a unique and engaging experience for all visitors.

Entrance: A Blend of Nostalgia and Futurism

The exhibition’s entrance sets the stage for a captivating journey. Inspired by architectural elements from
different eras, the entrance features a white train head adorned with ice blue LED lights, merging the past with the future. This nostalgic yet futuristic photo opportunity immediately captivates visitors, drawing them into the rich history and evolution of Hong Kong’s railways. Notably, the entrance design incorporates a classic photograph of the bubble light and water drop-shaped ceiling at Hung Hom Station, symbolizing the blend of old and new that defines the entire exhibition.

Ticket Hall: Mapping the Journey

As visitors proceed to the ticket hall, they encounter an integrated route map of MTR stations embedded into the floor. This map highlights the extensive development of the MTR network over the years, providing a visual representation of its growth and impact on the city. The time tunnel, designed to resemble a cinema entrance, features nostalgic signage and red velvet curtains, guiding visitors through a space illuminated by circular LED lights. This tunnel serves as a bridge between the old and new eras of the MTR, enhancing the immersive experience and evoking a sense of traveling through time.

Custom Corridor: A Technical Showcase

The journey continues into the custom corridor, which features two distinct walls that offer a deeper look into the technical and engineering aspects of the MTR. The signalling wall exhibits the MTR’s signalling system using real signalling lights and detailed graphic designs, educating visitors about the operational nerve center of the railway. Adjacent to it, the engineering wall showcases 1:1 scale blueprints of the M-Trains and second-generation Light Rail train heads. These intricate displays highlight the internal components of the trains, brought to life with computer-controlled LED lights and precise cutting techniques. This section of the exhibition not only informs but also fascinates with its technical prowess and innovative design.

Departure Hall: A Tribute to Railway Memories

In the departure hall, visitors can explore the “Railway Memories” Gallery, designed as a tribute to the rich history of the MTR. This gallery features a collection of exhibits from both current and retired MTR staff, including uniform accessories and a meticulously recreated 1:1 retired M-Train head. Adding to the nostalgic ambiance is the sound pod, inspired by a time capsule, which plays authentic sounds from various MTR systems around the world through directional speakers hidden within a red lampshade. These immersive audio experiences transport visitors back in time, allowing them to relive the unique sounds and moments that have defined Hong Kong’s railway journey.

Platform: Interactive and Educational

Finally, the exhibition culminates at the platform area, where visitors are treated to a creatively designed photo booth. This booth features a time-traveling door concept, allowing visitors to dress in various uniforms from different eras of the MTR’s history. The engaging setup includes comic illustrations, interactive games, and digital art, providing a fun and memorable experience for all ages. This playful interaction not only entertains but also educates visitors about the evolution of MTR staff uniforms and the broader history of the railway system. The platform area, with its blend of historical elements and modern technology, perfectly encapsulates the essence of the MTR Station Rail Voyage exhibition.
